Rotary First Harvest Newsletter Rotary First Harvest is a program of District 5030. June 2007 RFH Board Update Wrapping up another year of Rotary service June 30th marks the end of our Fiscal Year, and we're pleased to announce that -- thanks in large part to you -- RFH continued to provide millions of pounds of produce for those in need in our community. Some highlights of the year include: * Arizona grapefruit Continued successful partnerships with programs in Oregon, California and Arizona allowed us to bring much needed fresh produce to our Washington partners throughout the winter months; * The development of new strategic planning goals and guidelines to assist in making decisions about RFH's role in our hunger response community; * Arrangements with one new apple donor and one new trucking donor to begin supporting our work this coming harvest season; * RFH continuing to develop our role as a leader in the hunger response community in Washington with multiple presentations at the WA Food Coalition < http://www.wafoodcoalition.org/> annual meeting;* RFH recognized as Food Lifeline's < http://foodlifeline.org/> "Donor of the Year" at their annual World of Thanks event;* The addition of Jacki Lorenz as our Development Director; * The addition of little Ryan Patrick Boehm to Katy's family; * Continued service on the Access To Healthy Foods Coalition < http://www.accesstohealthyfoods.org/> board of directors;* A successful move (during the holiday / monsoon season!! < http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/27/us/27rain.html?ex=1181880000&en=877ce1215cfe104a&ei=5070> ) of the RFH office to the SODO district.Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support of our work! 25th Anniversary - Save the Date! RFH Founding Fathers ca. 1983September 22, 2007 will be Rotary Hunger Relief Day. The 25th Anniversary Committee has challenged every club in the District to develop a hunger relief project for that day. Plans are still being developed, but clubs are asked to submit their initial plans to Jacki < mailto:jacki@firstharvest.org> by July 13, 2007. The committee believes this will be an excellent way for Rotarians to develop "hands-on" projects with hunger relief programs in their community. More details will follow. In other news, the Committee met at the home of Mike Shanahan (a.k.a. Captain Zucchini) to hear his version of exactly how RFH (at the time called Operation First Harvest) grew from a bright idea into the District Project that it is today. Mike shared with the group stories of the early years, and provided some wonderful historical background to the committee members as they develop plans for commemorating our anniversary. Thank you again to Mike and the committee members for your commitment to honoring the work of so many Rotarians. Fundraising Factoids The Capella Group has given us an excellent opportunity to spread the word about the issues of hunger in Washington state. Jenny Capella has donated a 45 second commercial spot on "Entrepreneurs & Innovators" (E &I) where she will be a guest. E & I is a television program produced by SCCtv in partnership with The Agora Foundation and the University of Washington School of Business. The program's goal is to increase knowledge about creative Pacific Northwest businesses and the people who start and run them. The program will be produced in June, 2007 and will air in the Fall. Many foundations won't accept unsolicited grant applications. We need your help in this area. If you know an employee or trustee at any of the following foundations/companies, please let Jacki know. She will follow up on your introduction, keeping you posted as to how our approach progresses. Some of the foundations/companies include: * Bigelow and Dewey Foundation (Frederic A. C. Wardenburg IV, Sarah Frances Rutherford) * Boeschoten Foundation (Adrian P. Boeschoten, Anna M. Boeschoten, Paul A. Boeschoten, Monique G. Williams) * Brettler Family Foundation (Daniel E. Brettler, Cindy S. Brettler, Stephen R. Black) * Marguerite Casey Foundation (Freeman A. Hrabowski III, Patricia Schroeder, Luz Vega-Marquis, William H. Foege, Douglas X. Patino, William Bell, Joan Poliak, Gary Severson) * Coleman Family Foundation (James M. Coleman, Judy A. Mann) * Colymbus Foundation (Charles M. Bagley,Jr., Nancy H. Bagley) * Cone Family Foundation (Matthew L. Cone, Stephanie Terrien Cone, Emily Cone, Taylor Cone) We appreciate your help and look forward to your input on these foundations. Workparty Update We had a very productive work party on Saturday, May 12th at the Northwest Harvest Warehouse < http://www.northwestharvest.org/> in Magnolia. There were 30 Rotarians and a total of 54 volunteers (including Rotarians) which consisted of several teenagers, Rotaracters, and a large group of Notre Dame graduates. We packed 12,863 lbs of frozen corn, both cobs and kernels, and 6,481 lbs of variety pack. We kid about the continuous supply of frozen corn but it is the staple that is so important for those who utilize the food banks. We need to get more Rotarians involved with the packing process since these are the partners who we provide our fresh and frozen produce.Remember - please send us < mailto:rotary@firstharvest.org> any photos of your club members participating in an RFH Workparty. We'd love to use them here!COPYRIGHT 2007, ROTARY FIRST HARVEST P.O. Box 94117, Seattle, WA 98124 | Phone: 206-236-0408 | Fax: 206-236-0357 | Email: rotary@firstharvest.org
